Taurus 9mm Pistols
If there was a gun that exceeded expectations more than others in our roundup of the best handguns of 2022, it was the Taurus G3X. We fired a whole host of new full-size, compact and compact pistols, and when the dust settled, the G3X was the gun that stood out for the entire test team.

This compact 9mm pistol is a simple and affordable pistol, designed to compete with the (heavily affected) Glock G19. It is a striker-fired, polymer-framed pistol that comes with two 15-round magazines. The Taurus G3X shares some similarities with the G19—which pretty much sets the benchmark in the class—but it also has a few key differences that set it apart. Plus, the G3X comes at a great price.
The field of compact assault handguns is flooded with similar-looking handguns that have similar features and can do pretty much the same things. It is a proud market and it is very difficult for individual rifles to differentiate themselves. The differences are often caused by a combination of features and a small favorable price. The Taurus G3X scores well in both areas.
Size-wise, the G3X has a much shorter barrel than many pistols in the compact class. Its 3.2-inch barrel is about an inch shorter than the Glock G19's 4.02-inch barrel, and most compact pistols have 3.8- to 4-inch barrels. While the barrel length is closer to what you'll find in the precision minis class, the grip and frame length are rated for 15-round magazines—the same capacity as the G19. A slightly shorter barrel would certainly make a difference in portability and portability, especially in a cyclo-carry mode.
Another notable feature of the Taurus G3x is that it has a “re-strike” ability, which means if you get a light initial hit and the gun doesn’t fire, you can pull the trigger again and it will strike the primer again. While this isn't a feature you're likely to use on a regular basis, light knocks can occur occasionally. On the first shot, the primer failed to release much ammunition because the primer was not fully seated in the case.

The G3X's trigger is good, and our sample broke in at 5 pounds, 8 ounces—half a pound under the published spec of 6 pounds. Silver revolvers tend to have a lot of action before the trigger breaks, but this wasn't too bad. It features a trigger safety bar that must be depressed to fire the gun, the trigger breaks and has a nice tactile reset.

The Taurus G3X comes with two 15-round steel magazines, and several members of our test team commented that the quality of the magazines was better than they expected for the price of the gun. Good magazines can be underestimated and overlooked, but bad magazines can damage the function and reputation of an otherwise great weapon. For example, another pistol in our test had a magazine with a follower that caused a major malfunction—something that is hard to ignore even in the best pistol.
Overall, the Taurus G3X is a simple, clean and good-looking pistol. Even with a short barrel, it has a single-groove accessory rail in the front of the frame, low-profile sights, and a flair-sliding slide profile for easy carrying and pulling. The grip has a nice soft dotted texture that provides a secure grip, and the frame has some attention to detail, such as ridges to prevent accidental activation of the slide stop, and a small notch for indexing the thumb of the support hand on the palm. the frame.

If I'm feeling queasy, the only aesthetic I don't like about the gun is the way the serial number is etched into the barrel and stock—it looks like it's hand-stamped. Seems out of place on this gun.
Out of nearly 20 handguns, the Taurus G3X really stood out when we first started shooting it. We found it accurate, reliable, and easy to shoot—even compared to some pistols that were much more expensive.
We fired approximately 350 rounds of various ammo through the Taurus G3X and everything worked reliably. We used 115-grain Federal Premium and US Cartridge loads, Hornady Black 124-grain XTP Defense loads, Winchester 147-grain FMJ and even 147-grain Nosler ASP Defense loads—all without a hiccup. We rode the G3X hard and periodically gave it some CLP on the skid bars and barrel for lubrication.
The texture of the grip and lines of the frame make the pistol easy to shoot and hold. In terms of performance, the Taurus G3X is way ahead of its weight class. The recoil trigger is smooth for a compact 9mm, and the gun is easy to control during rapid fire and transitions between targets. After two days of keeping Venice warm, we were very happy with it. It ran perfectly and everything was still tight at the end of the process.

The Taurus G3X simply does what a compact, polymer-framed 9mm pistol needs. It shoots and shoots with confidence at a great price. We weren't sure if we'd see a performance gap due to the price, and we're happy to say we didn't.
We had no complaints about performance, but a neater serial number engraving on the slide and barrel would have given the rifle a cleaner look, and the optical cutout was the icing on the cake.
Sometimes cheap means cheap, and lower prices mean you're sacrificing quality dramatically. This was not the impression we got from the Taurus G3X. The sample we received had its own against the more expensive revolvers. In some ways, it was more fun to shoot than its competitors. You often get what you pay for, but with the Taurus G3X you get something extra.
