Taurus 9mm Review

If there was one handgun that exceeded expectations the most in our roundup of the best handguns of 2022, it was the Taurus G3X. We shot the entire field of new full-size, compact, and microcompact pistols, and when the dust settled, the G3X was the standout pistol for the entire test team.

Taurus G3 9mm Pistol Review

This compact 9mm is a simple and affordable pistol, designed to compete with the Glock G19 (which it is heavily influenced by). This is a striker fired polymer framed pistol that comes with two 15 round magazines. The Taurus G3X shares some similarities with the G19, which pretty much sets the standard in this category, but it also has some key differences that set it apart. Plus, the G3X is a great price.

The compact assault pistol field is flooded with similar-looking pistols that have similar features and can do nearly the same things. It's a fierce market and it's very difficult for individual guns to differentiate themselves. The differences are often made by a combination of small benefits and price. The Taurus G3X scores well in both areas.

Speaking of size, the G3X has a significantly shorter barrel than many guns in the compact category. Its 3.2-inch barrel is almost an inch shorter than the Glock G19's 4.02-inch barrel, and most compact pistols have 3.8- to 4-inch barrels. While the barrel length is closer to what you'll find in the microcompact category, the grip length and frame are sized to hold 15-round magazines, the same capacity as the G19. A slightly shorter barrel would certainly make a difference in comfort and mobility, especially with the carry position of the appendage.

Another standout feature of the Taurus G3x is that it is “re-strike capable”, meaning in the event you get hit with a light primer and the gun fails to fire, you can pull the trigger again and it will re-prime. Although this is not a feature that would likely be used normally, light primer strokes can sometimes occur. I've had primers not fire on the first shot with a lot of ammo because the primers weren't fully seated in the case.

Taurus G2c Review [2021]

The G3X's performance is good, and our sample broke at 5 pounds, 8 ounces, half a pound under the published spec of 6 pounds. Shotguns tend to go a long way before the trigger pulls, but this one wasn't too bad. It features a trigger safety strip that must be squeezed for the gun to fire, and the trigger is collapsible and has a nice tactile reset.

The Taurus G3X has a nice trigger that can be pulled a second time to "repeat" a primer if the cartridge doesn't fire. Bill Buckley

The Taurus G3X comes with two 15-round steel magazines, and several members of our test team noted that the quality of the magazines was better than they expected given the price of the gun. Good magazines can be downplayed and overlooked, but bad magazines can ruin the function and reputation of an otherwise great gun. For example, another gun in our test had a magazine with a follower that caused significant malfunction, and that's hard to ignore even with the best gun.

Taurus 9mm Review

Overall, the Taurus G3X is just a no-frills, clean, good-looking gun. Even with the short barrel, there's an additional single-slot rail on the front of the frame, low-profile sights, and a tastefully beveled slide profile for easy carry and draw. The grip has a nice texture that provides a secure hold, and the frame has some attention to detail, such as a ridge to prevent accidental activation of the slide stop and a small index thumb tip for support of the March.

If I'm going to be picky, the only aesthetic feature I don't like about the gun is the way the serial number is engraved on the barrel and slide - it almost looks hand struck. It looks out of place on this gun.

Among a field of nearly 20 total pistols, the Taurus G3X really stood out once we started shooting it. We found it to be accurate, reliable and easy to shoot, even compared to some guns that were much more expensive.

We fired roughly 350 rounds of a variety of ammo through the Taurus G3X and it handled it all reliably. We used Federal Premium and US Cartridge 115-grain loads, Hornady Black 124-grain XTP Defense loads, Winchester 147-grain FMJ loads, and even Nosler ASP Defense 147-grain loads all without a single problem. We rode the G3X hard and only gave it a little CLP periodically on the slide rails and lube barrel.

The grip texture and frame contours made the gun easy to shoot and engage. From a performance standpoint, the Taurus G3X punches above its weight class. Recoil impulse is smooth for a compact 9mm, and the pistol is easy to control while rapidly firing and changing targets. After keeping the gun warm for two days, we were very pleased with it. It worked perfectly and was still tight at the end of the process.

The Taurus G3X is similar to the Glock G19 in some respects, but has a barrel that is nearly an inch shorter. Bill Buckley

The Taurus G3X simply does what a compact polymer-action 9mm pistol should do. Shoots and shoots reliably at a great value. We weren't sure if we'd see a performance gap because of the price, and we're happy to say no.

We had no complaints about the performance, but a clean serial number engraving on the slide and barrel would give the gun a cleaner look, and the optical cut would be the icing on the cake.

Sometimes cheap means cheap, and lower prices mean you're making a major sacrifice in quality. That wasn't the impression we got from the Taurus G3X. The sample we received held its own with the more expensive guns. In some ways, it was a little nicer to shoot than its competitors. You often get what you pay for, but with the Taurus G3X you get a little more.

The new Taurus G3c 9mm subcompact pistol has just been introduced with many useful features and upgrades at a very reasonable price. It's obvious from handling and shooting this gun that Taurus is dedicated to making competitively priced concealed carry pistols with some nice features and attention to quality control.

Taurus is making good progress in re-establishing its reputation and this solid budget pistol is helping. They are also working to improve their customer service. Made in Brazil (not at its new US facility in Bainbridge, Georgia), the G3c improves on the already best-selling Gen 3 full-size 9mm budget G3 and subcompact G2c. And as my favorite Mayberry mechanic, Gomer Pyle, used to say “Surprise, surprise! They added some very useful upgrades at a budget price of close to $300 for a single-action, 22-ounce, 12-round pistol.

Metal, metal and more metal. Coverage, practicality and durability. This new G3c pistol has some nice upgrades and accessories that you would normally pay more for. I wanted to shoot and thoroughly evaluate this budget-priced subcompact 9mm to consider for concealed carry, a fun pinch hitter at the range, and/or as a low-cost, quick-access truck gun. And I hope it helps you make some decisions. You can compare this G3c review to my analysis, comparisons, and rankings of 21 other concealed carry handguns in my book Concealed Carry and Handgun Essentials.

First, I want to give you a summary of the specifications and features of the G3c as a basic point. Below I give you my 10 criteria that I use to evaluate all guns.
