It weighs 55 ounces. And yet it's still about half a pound less than the Raging Bull. The Taurus Raging Hunter was also American Hunter Magazine's 2019 Hunting Gun of the Year.

This pistol combines the best features of a premium double action pistol and then adds some features not usually seen in standard pistols. Here is a feature list with illustrated images.

The .44 Magnum cartridge can put a little pressure on the wrist. The Taurus borrowed a feature from their Ringing Hunter pistol in the upper pressure chambers. It also has a retainer for the cylinder, not just at the back as usual, but also at the front of the cylinder.

But it's really not new - I had an original Dan Wesson Model 15 in the early 80's that used a front slide. It helps keep the cylinder closed and locked when taking a high pressure load, so that's good.

There are four vents on each side. These holes direct gases out and up, helping to push the muzzle down during recoil. This makes muzzle jump much easier.

And speaking of muzzle jump, you definitely want to stay away from the hammer when shooting .44 magnum loads. I saw a guy put the hammer of a S&W .44 Magnum in his forehead when he wouldn't move his head further back when we warned him, away from the scope that was mounted on the gun.

The .44 produces pretty good recoil (about 18.5 ft/lbs of recoil energy), but those vents help. And if you think 18.5 ft/lbs of recoil energy is nothing, remember that the .243 Winchester produces only 9 ft/lbs from a 7 lb rifle. Another aspect of bull shooting is wearing good hearing protection. Vents tend to increase the explosion.

This versatile rail allows you to mount a scope, red dot or laser sight. With 13 slots, you can place your sight closer to your eye or further away. Another point: You don't usually see a long Picatinny style rail on handguns. If they have any at all, it's usually short. It's long enough to be useful.

The Ringing Hunter (and other pistols) use this grip (taken from the Taurus website): GRIP RUBBER RED 454, 444, 45, 22 HORNET

The black rubber grip, designed with finger grooves, provides a solid connection to your fingers and hand, while the red strap is harder and helps absorb recoil. As written above, they put this grip on their big guns, the .44 Magnum and .454 caliber. It has to work or they would have changed it by now and yet it has been around for a while.

If you look at the older S&W Model 29 above, you'll notice that the firing pin is attached to the hammer. Taurus does not do that with this gun. The firing pin is mounted on the frame and is actuated by the force of the hammer when the trigger is pulled and the transfer rod is in place to transfer the energy of the hammer to the firing pin. An apt name, no doubt.

The front sight is attached. Let's look at that picture of the barrel vents again, only this time we're looking in the mirror.

Notice the pin under the mirror. That's fine - you can change it to a higher one. I didn't find this in my research, but in my experience, anytime you see a pin under the front sight on a gun, that means the sight is removable and possibly replaceable.

If I owned this gun, I might swap it out for some sort of night sight - that would help it stand out against the black rear sight.

There is a good square slot on the back inside an adjustable case. (I'm not sure how all that oil got in there - I hadn't fired it yet when these pictures were taken. I like to clean my shooting irons. Apparently whoever tested this gun before I got it put that oil in there).

Adjustments are as usual. No special tool or tiny jeweler's screwdriver - just a regular flathead screwdriver will do for your rear sight. My only concern is that the sight is very old fashioned, black-back-black-front like target pistols. I tend to paint the front sights bright orange and mark the rear sight slots on other guns I own to make them more visible to my aging eyes.

This is doubly important for this shotgun as they are more often fired in low light. Whether it was just dawn or the sun was fading fast in the evening, most of the deer I photographed were in less than great light. But you can always stick a red dot sight in one of the 13 slots on the barrel rail.

My beloved 629 has a cylinder with less thick walls. I've always heard that 29/629 loads should be kept below max because the barrel wasn't as stable and one detent could be problematic.

Whether that's true or not (fired a lot of wrist shots through this gun) I like medium loads anyway so it's not a problem. However, this Furious Hunter's roll is different. Look how meaty the roll is:

Not bad at all. And while we're looking at the cylinder, look at the star on the back of the cylinder - it's well built here too.

Barrel on Rampant Hunter, unlike Rampant Bull, is a two-part novel. The actual barrel is screwed into the frame and then the barrel shroud is glued to the front of the barrel, a la Dan Wesson, except the barrel can't be replaced by normal people unless you're working on a Taurus. This saves weight, as the Rampant Bull weighs about half a pound more than the Rampant Hunter, and most of that is in the barrel. Here is the muzzle:

These are the areas that I think Taurus did a really good job of with Raging Hunter. It is indeed a very good weapon for its intended purpose. The nice thing is that they make it easy to attach the mirror by putting a really long piece of rail over the barrel shroud.

They even considered the hunting environment in terms of finish. While the Raging Hunter might come in a rather shiny stainless steel finish, the Hunter is matte black with a stainless steel (or black) frame and barrel. This makes it quite invisible in the field.

The finish is a very flat, utilitarian black that you don't mind taking to the deer stand and bumping into. It should be pretty easy to tap. Take a look at the images above and check out the finish. I think it beats a very glossy top coat.

I couldn't wait to get to my backyard shooting bench, but I had to be patient. Right after I picked up this gun at Duane's, we had a cold front come through and had several nights of nine degrees followed by cold days.

I'm used to shooting a long barreled .44, considering mine has an 8 3/8 inch barrel, so this won't be anything new. It will be different though and I'm looking forward to being on the bench with this beast. I'm hoping the extra weight (55oz compared to my 629's 49.5) and the ports go a long way in preventing recoil.

After scraping several inches of snow off my shooting stand, I finally got this gun. I wanted to try it with one of my hunting loads, a 260-grain, semi-hard cutter over a 6.5-grain Tite Group. This load was consistent action with deer. This is not a "pedal to the metal" type of load. It's chronographed at 1080 fps from the Raging Hunter's long barrel, but it shoots with authority.

Shooting the Ringing Hunter produces 680 ft/lbs of energy, more than enough to put a deer on its side at about 100 yards. In the 30 or so years I've been hunting with my long barrel 629, I've found that I don't need a heavy, solid bullet flying at 1300 f.p.s. put the deer down for good. Also, 1000 to 1100 fps works just as well and is easier on both the shooter and the gun.

Accuracy wise, it's not quite the 100 yard load that the target shows, but around 50-75 yards it will do. Also, this is just one of several loads I've joined
